Motor imagery (MI) is frequently used in tennis players. This pilot study aimed to assess whether the MI modality and preference of skilled tennis players could influence their service performance when using MI before serving first balls. Twenty expert players (Mage = 18.6 years) completed the movement imagery questionnaire (third version) to assess their MI modality scores (internal visual, external visual, and kinesthetic) and their MI preference. Participants completed 4 experimental counterbalanced sessions spread over 4 weeks, each including the completion of 20 first-serve balls in match condition. The sessions included a control condition (i.e., only physical practice trials) and three MI conditions during which the players had to mentally imagine themselves performing a serve according to one of the imagery modalities, either internal visual, external visual, or kinesthetic, before serving. The percentage of success, the speed of the service balls (measured by a tablet with SWING VISION and a radar gun), and an efficiency score were recorded and then evaluated by experts and served as performance indicators and dependent variables. The results of this study showed that players benefited from MI before serving and that almost a third of the participants achieved a higher percentage of success and efficiency scores when using their preferred MI modality. These results lead us, in an applied way, to suggest to skilled tennis players to determine their MI preference and to have recourse to the mental simulation of a successful serve before serving the first balls in match condition.

The high occurrence of distal fibula fractures among older women suggests a potential link to impaired bone health. Here we used a multiscale imaging approach to investigate the microarchitecture, mineralization, and biomechanics of the human distal fibula in relation to age and sex. Micro-computed tomography was performed to analyze the local volumetric bone mineral density and various microarchitectural parameters of the trabecular and the cortical compartment. Bone mineral density distribution and osteocyte lacunar parameters were quantified using quantitative backscattered electron imaging in periosteal, endocortical, and trabecular regions. Additionally, cortical hardness and Young's modulus were assessed by nanoindentation. While cortical porosity strongly increased with age independent of sex, trabecular microarchitecture remained stable. Notably, nearly half of the specimens showed non-bony hypermineralized tissue located at the periosteum, similar to that previously detected in the femoral neck, with no consistent association with advanced age. Independent of this finding, cortical and trabecular mineralization, i.e., mean calcium content, as well as endocortical tissue hardness increased with age in males but not females. Importantly, we also observed mineralized osteocyte lacunae that increased with age specifically in females. In conclusion, our results indicate that skeletal aging of the distal fibula is signified not only by pronounced cortical porosity but also by an increase in mineralized osteocyte lacunae in females. These findings may provide an explanation for the increased occurrence of ankle fractures in older women.

BACKGROUND: Students make many errors in visual programming. In order to learn from these, it is important that students regulate their emotions and view errors as learning opportunities. AIMS: This study aimed to explore to what extent momentary emotions, specifically enjoyment, anxiety and boredom, as well as the error learning orientation of students, interacted during a 1-day course on visual programming in an out-of-school learning environment. SAMPLES: The sample consisted of 269 lower secondary school students (grades 7-9). METHODS: The data were collected in an intervention study, with questionnaires applied directly before and after the course, and with four measurements of state emotions during the course. RESULTS: The results showed that error learning orientation had an expected effect on the students' emotions at the beginning of the course. The emotions changed positively over the course of the workshop, while the error learning orientation remained stable. No differences in error learning orientation were found between the control and intervention groups. An expected, reciprocal effect of students' emotions on their error learning orientation at the end of the course day could not be found. CONCLUSION: Changes in error learning orientation are difficult to achieve during 1-day courses. Nevertheless, through targeted, pedagogical approaches, which aim to minimize the influence of unfavourable emotions that occur in problem-oriented learning situations, teachers could help students develop a positive error learning orientation in the long term, whereby errors are viewed as an opportunity for learning.

In recent years, learning and motor control researchers have examined, in diverse ways, the practical strategies that enhance motor skill acquisition in sport. In this study we investigated the impact of combining Motor Imagery (MI), Feedback (F), and Action Observation (AO) on the quality of archery longbow shooting at a 10-meter target. We randomly assigned 60 young athletes to (a) a Control group (Control), (b) a Feedback and Motor Imagery group (F + MI), and (c) a Feedback, Motor Imagery, and Action Observation group (F + MI + AO). Over an 8-week intervention period athletes performed two training sessions per week. During each session, all participants engaged in two blocks of ten effective shots. Performance improvement was significantly greater in the F + MI + AO group than in the two other groups, confirming the beneficial impact of combining all three methods of improving archery accuracy. These findings suggest practical recommendations for athletes and trainers for delivering optimal mental training to improve shooting accuracy for these archers.

(1) Background: Motor imagery (MI) is relevantly used to improve motor performance and promote rehabilitation. As MI ability and vividness can be affected by circadian modulation, it has been proposed that MI should ideally be performed between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Whether such a recommendation remains effective in a hot and humid environment, such as a tropical climate, remains unknown. (2) Methods: A total of 35 acclimatized participants completed a MI questionnaire and a mental chronometry test at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m. Visual (VI) and kinesthetic imagery (KI) abilities, as well as temporal congruence between actual walking and MI, were collected. Ambient temperature, chronotypes, thermal comfort, affect, and fatigue were also measured. (3) Results: VI scores were higher at 6 p.m. than at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m., and temporal congruence was higher at 6 p.m. than at 7 a.m. Comfort, thermal sensation, and positive affect scores were higher at 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. (4) Conclusion: Data support greater imagery ability and accuracy when participants perceive the environment as more pleasant and comfortable. MI guidelines typically provided in neutral climates should therefore be adapted to tropical climates, with MI training sessions ideally scheduled in the late afternoon.

INTRODUCTION: There are little data regarding elective referral to the military specialist, especially considering common pathologies such as spinal diseases, which, in the French forces, involve military neurosurgeons. An overview of the management of the military patient referred to neurosurgery consultation, especially considering spinal diseases that both constitute an operational healthissue in the forces and appear of special interest. The objective was to describe the reasons, demographics, and care pathways, addressed to the neurosurgeon. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study focused on all military patients referred for neurosurgery consultation at Sainte Anne Military Hospital in Toulon. Extracted data included demographic characteristics, army, unit, military specialty, the reason for referral, the diagnosis by the neurosurgeon, treatment, and outcome. RESULTS: From January 2018 to December 2019, 352 patients were referred for neurosurgical consultation by the unit general practitioner. Spinal disease (n = 297, 91%) was the most frequent reason. Lumbar degenerative disk disease accounted for 20% of consultations, regardless of the patient's unit or specialty. Most of the patients seen in consultation received nonsurgical management (n = 271, 82.6%). These patients mainly presented with cervical or lumbar degenerative disk disease (n = 99, 36.5%) or cervical or lumbar herniated discs (n = 57, 21.0%). Ninety-eight patients (29.9%) were referred exclusively for medical fitness assessment. Few patients experienced full resolution of their presenting complaint after management (n = 9, 2.8%). CONCLUSIONS: This descriptive study demonstrates the predominance of degenerative spinal diseases in military patients referred to neurosurgery. It reflects the importance of the medical and military competence required to maintain operational capability upstream and downstream of war traumatology. The description of the care pathways invites us to define more proactive multidisciplinary pathways for the management of these diseases in the armed forces.

Aim: We aimed to investigate the performance of procalcitonin (PCT) assay between 12 and 36 h after onset of fever (PCT H12-H36) to predict invasive bacterial infection (IBI) (ie, meningitis and/or bacteremia) in febrile neonates. Methods: We retrospectively included all febrile neonates hospitalized in the general pediatric department in a teaching hospital from January 2013 to December 2019. PCT assay ≤ 0.6 ng/ml was defined as negative. The primary outcome was to study the performance of PCT H12-H36 to predict IBI. Results: Out of 385 included neonates, IBI was ascertainable for 357 neonates (92.7%). We found 16 IBI: 3 meningitis and 13 bacteremia. Sensitivity and specificity of PCT H12-H36 in the identification of IBI were, respectively, 100% [95% CI 82.9-100%] and 71.8% [95% CI 66.8-76.6%], with positive and negative predictive values of 14.3% [95% CI 8.4-22.2%] and 100% [95% CI 98.8-100%] respectively. Of the 259 neonates who had a PCT assay within the first 12 h of fever (< H12) and a PCT assay after H12-H36, 8 had IBI. Two of these 8 neonates had a negative < H12 PCT but a positive H12-H36 PCT. Conclusions: PCT H12-H36 did not miss any IBI whereas < H12 PCT could missed IBI diagnoses. PCT H12-H36 might be included in clinical decision rule to help physicians to stop early antibiotics in febrile neonates.

This research aim to investigate the effects of motor imagery (MI), focused on the trajectory of the ball and the target area, and self-talk (motivational function) before the actual strike on the performance of the service in skilled tennis players. Thirty-three participants (6 females and 27 males, M age = 15.9 years), competing in regional to national competitions, were randomly divided into three groups: Control, MI, and MI + self-talk. They performed a pre-test (25 first service), 20 acquisition sessions (physical trial, physical trial + MI and physical trial + MI + self-talk), and a post-test similar to the pre-test, in match situations. The percentage of the first service, their speed, and the efficiency scores, evaluated by experts, were use as dependent variables and indicators of performance. While there was no difference in service speed ( p > 0.05), this study showed an improvement in the first service percentage and efficiency (all ps < 0.01) in the participants of the MI and MI + self-talk groups. Additionally, analyses revealed greater efficiency when MI was combined with self-talk compared to other conditions. It, therefore, seems advantageous for skilled tennis players to use MI and motivational self-talk before performing the first service balls.

INTRODUCTION: Motor imagery (MI) can be defined as the mental simulation of an action without performing it. Its effectiveness can be substantially influenced by imagery ability, and it is currently accepted that three main modalities are used in MI (kinaesthetic imagery, and internal or external visual imageries). In the context of rehabilitation, MI combined with physical therapy is further known to facilitate functional improvements, and promote cortical reorganization and long-term recovery. This study aimed to test the reproducibility and the validity of constructs (internal consistency and factorial structure) of the Movement Imagery Questionnaire-3 Second French version (MIQ-3Sf). METHOD: The internal consistency as well as the validity of constructs and the test-retest inter-rate reproducibility of the MIQ-3Sf was examined, in 553 participants, for the kinaesthetic and visual items. RESULTS: The composite reliability scores (≥0.92) and the intraclass correlation coefficients (>0.88) for the kinaesthetic, internal visual and external visual imagery subscales revealed satisfactory internal consistency and reproducibility. Moreover, Pearson correlations revealed a strong relationship between the MIQ-3Sf and the MIQ-3f. CONCLUSIONS: /Implications. The MIQ-3Sf can be considered as a valid, reliable and useful questionnaire for examining MI ability in the context of rehabilitation.

This mini review examines the impact of tropical climate (TC) on motivational factors during aerobic performance and proposes the tracks of an integrative theoretical model to better understand the direct and indirect motivational mechanisms that can operate on athletic performances. TC is detrimental for aerobic performance and, although it clearly induces physiological constraints, these do not seem to be the only factors that explain the performance decline. Indeed, TC performance researchers have developed a theory of anticipation, which suggests that the brain commands a reduction in effort to protect the body from probable harm and heatstroke risk. The objective of this mini review is thus to examine the possibility that motivation may be a key factor in TC performance. The main psychological impacts of TC on aerobic performance are reviewed and an integrative theoretical model is presented that may help to better understand the mechanisms of motivation.

Inactivity is known to have harmful effects on the physical and mental health of older adults. This study used a randomized, parallel trial design to evaluate whether daily text prompts to practice mindfulness would have a positive impact on the time that adults aged 50 years or older spend in aerobic physical activity. The participants were recruited from a certified fitness center and divided into mindfulness and control groups. For 4 weeks, they were exposed to the experimental conditions, with or without the morning text message. In the morning message condition, the mindfulness groups received a text message with the instruction to practice audio-guided mindfulness for 10 min, and the control group received a placebo message. The participants practicing mindfulness reported significantly more weekly minutes of aerobic physical activity and higher intrinsic motivation than the control participants. Mindfulness training was effective at increasing aerobic physical activity duration and might complement physical activity programs.

The thermal discomfort caused by a hot or hot-wet climate can have negative effects on human performance. The 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place in Tokyo's hot and humid summer period, possibly exposing athletes to severe environmental stressors. In addition to technical, tactical, physical and nutritional preparation, Olympians and Paralympians need an optimal psychological state to turn in their best performances, especially in terms of emotional control, concentration and motivation. Yet, the tropical climate can have many negative effects on these factors. Better understanding of the negative effects of this climate and the strategies to manage them might be crucial for competitors, coaches and their teams in Japan. At the psychological level, cooling interventions before, during and/or immediately after exercise were mainly studied on perceptual responses. However, the effects of these interventions on other psychological components such as cognitive abilities or psychological states and the use of psychological techniques have been little explored, especially in hot-wet climate. Thus, this article proposes to take stock of the knowledge on the conventional and alternative strategies that help athletes to psychologically cope with the subtropical climate of Tokyo.

The effectiveness of motor imagery practice is known to depend on age and on the ability to form motor images. In the same individual, motor imagery quality changes during the day, being better late in the morning for older adults and in the afternoon for younger adults. Does this mean that motor imagery practice should be done at specific time of the day depending on the age of participants to maximize motor learning? To examine whether the effect of motor imagery practice varies as a function of time of day and age, the authors used an arm configuration reproduction task and measured position sense accuracy before and after 135 kinesthetic motor imagery trials. Younger and older participants were randomly assigned to either a morning or an afternoon session. Data showed that the accuracy for reproducing arm configurations improved following imagery practice regardless of time of day for both younger and older adults. Moreover, the authors observed that the position sense was less accurate in the afternoon than in the morning in older participants (before and after motor imagery practice), while performance did not change during the day in younger participants. These results may have practical implications in motor learning and functional rehabilitation programs. They highlight the effectiveness of motor imagery practice for movement accuracy in both younger and older adults regardless of time of day. By contrast, they reveal that the assessment of position sense requires that the time of day be taken into account when practitioners want to report on the older patients' progress without making any mistakes.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested whether text messages prompting adults 50 years of age and older to perform mental imagery would increase aerobic physical activity (APA) duration using a randomized parallel trial design. METHOD: Participants were assigned to an Imagery 1, Imagery 2, or placebo group. For 4 weeks, each group was exposed to two conditions (morning text message vs. no morning text message). In the morning message condition, the imagery groups received a text message with the instruction to mentally imagine performing an APA, and the placebo group received a placebo message. All participants received an evening text message of "Did you do your cardio today? If yes, what did you do?" for 3 days per week. RESULTS: Participants of the imagery groups reported significantly more weekly minutes of APA in the morning text message condition compared with the no morning message condition. CONCLUSION: Electronic messages were effective at increasing minutes of APA.

This paper demonstrates the importance of the reception and development of Goethe's metamorphosis of plants as a methodological and philosophical framework in the history of botanical theories. It proposes a focus on the textbooks written by the German botanist Ludwig Reichenbach and his first attempt to use Goethe's idea of metamorphosis of plants as fundamental to his natural system of plants published under the title 'Botany for Women', in German Botanik für Damen (1828). In this book, Reichenbach paid particular attention to Goethe's sensitive views on the essence of nature; he regarded Goethe's idea of metamorphosis in the plant kingdom as an ideal model to interpret connections of natural phenomena, in particular as a conceptual frame for a natural system. Furthermore, he aimed to develop the philosophical statement of the metamorphosis, in which he called for nature-philosophical conceptions in order to materialize his representation of plant "affinities," and of a kind of "ontogeny" of the whole plant kingdom. This paper demonstrates that, between speculative views and empirical attempts, the extent to which Reichenbach actually belonged to a new "school" of thought, which left its mark on the history and philosophy of botany.

We examined the similarities between actual and motor imagery practice with regard to the development of sensorimotor representations. Participants had to reproduce knee joint positions (15 or 150 trials) in visuo-proprioceptive or proprioceptive conditions (Experiment 1) or in visual, proprioceptive or visuo-proprioceptive imagery conditions (Experiment 2), before being transferred in a proprioceptive condition. A familiarization session in a proprioceptive condition was performed before imagery practice only (Experiment 2). Results showed that the effect of vision withdrawal varied according to actual or motor imagery practice: performance accuracy in transfer decreased after actual visuo-proprioceptive practice while it increased after visuo-proprioceptive imagery practice. These results suggest that different movement representations can be developed following actual or imagery practice. They also suggest that information from previous experience could be stored in a sensorimotor memory and could be fundamental for the efficiency of motor imagery practice.
